  11. A number of Working Groups met at the St.  Louis IETF meeting.  Brief
  12. summaries of their activities are presented below.  More detailed
  13. accounts are presented in the Minutes for each Working Group.

  15. Also, at the St.  Louis meeting, the SNMP Network Management Directorate
  16. met and considered five items of business.
  17.  
  18.  
  19.   1. The Ethernet-like Interfaces MIB, as amended by the SNMP Working
  20.      Group at St.  Louis, was discussed and reviewed positively.
  21.  
  22.   2. The IP over AppleTalk MIB produced by the IP over Appletalk Working
  23.      Group was discussed and reviewed positively.
  24.  
  25.   3. The state of the SMDS Interface Protocol MIB introduced to the SNMP
  26.      Working Group at St.  Louis was discussed.
  27.  
  28.   4. The current draft of the OSPF MIB produced by the OSPF Working
  29.      Group was given a preliminary review in anticipation of its
  30.      imminent completion.  A list of comments was provided to the
  31.      author.
  32.  
  33.   5. A document describing enhancements to the SNMP administrative model
  34.      to provide better support for security and proxy configurations was
  35.      discussed at length and reviewed positively after amendments
  36.      designed to minimize change to existing infrastructure.  The
  37.      updated version of this document was subsequently distributed for
  38.      wider review to the SNMP Security Working Group.

  41. Internet Accounting (acct)
  42.  
  43. The Internet Accounting Working Group met at St.  Louis and focused on
  44. definition of MIB objects for the collection of accounting information.
  45. They also spent some time on minor revisions of the accounting
  46. architecture document, which will be distributed soon as an Internet
  47. Draft.  The Accounting Working Group is also coordinating with the
  48. Remote LAN Monitoring and Operational Statistics Working Group to assure
  49.

  57. that no redundant MIB instrumentation is defined.

  68. Bridge MIB (bridge)
  69.  
  70. The Bridge MIB Working Group met and, with specific amendments,
  71. recommended their consensus document for consideration as a Proposed
  72. Standard.  One strictly informational question will be resolved via
  73. electronic mail.  The approved Bridge MIB text will be distributed by
  74. electronic mail for working members to verify the agreed amendments.
  75. The revised text will be available before the next meeting.

  77. During the Bridge MIB Working Group meeting, and also in the IETF
  78. Plenary session, presentations were made to clarify the IETF policy on
  79. the translation of network management definitions developed by other
  80. standards bodies into the SNMP idiom.  A letter that addresses the
  81. particular case of the Bridge MIB effort has been incorporated into the
  82. Bridge MIB Working Group Minutes.  Its three enumerated points capture
  83. the general policy for ``importing'' MIBs adopted by the IESG.

  85. Character MIB (charmib)
  86.  
  87. The Character MIB Working Group met and reviewed the current working
  88. documents.  These were recommended by the Working Group for
  89. consideration as Proposed Standards with specific amendments.  Revised
  90. text reflecting these amendments will be available soon.

  92. FDDI MIB (fddimib)
  93.  
  94. The FDDI MIB Working Group met and accomplished all goals set at its
  95. previous meeting.  Work on defining instrumentation was completed, as
  96. was work on mapping actions in the ANSI specifications into appropriate
  97. SNMP MIB objects.  The need for 64-bit integer MIB objects was obviated,
  98. and a document defining two SNMP traps to model FDDI events was
  99. introduced at this meeting.

  101. Management Services Interface (msi)
  102.  
  103. The Management Services Interface Working Group met briefly at the St.
  104. Louis meeting and adjourned owing to low attendance and the absence of
  105. key individuals.  The Working Group affirmed its decision that the
  106. interface is only relevant to management stations.  Those assembled
  107. reviewed the list of outstanding issues and found two particularly
  108. problematic:  (a) the translation between the OSI and SNMP information
  109. models and (b) the tension between the usefulness of an opaquely defined
  110. interface and the need to offer guidance to implementors.

  112. DECNet Phase IV MIB (decnetiv)

  122. The DECNet Phase IV MIB Working Group made many changes to the current
  123. document including significant reduction in the number of objects.  The
  124. definition of events was relegated to a distinct document, generic
  125. portions of the X.25 instrumentation were excised, and the definition of
  126. conformance groups was revised.  The Working Group reached consensus on
  127. the text as amended.  Revised text will be available within four weeks.

  129. Remote Lan Monitoring (rlanmib)
  130.  
  131. The Remote LAN Monitoring Working Group met and reviewed most of the
  132. current draft in detail.  A revised draft will be posted to the mailing
  133. list soon.  An interim Working Group meeting will be held in 4--6 weeks
  134. to continue discussion.
  135.  
  136. SNMP
  137.  
  138. The SNMP Working Group met and considered two documents.  The Working
  139. Group recommended the Ethernet-like Interfaces MIB, with very minor
  140. amendments, for consideration by the IESG as a Proposed Standard.  The
  141. approved text will be posted to the Working Group mailing list soon
  142. after the meeting.  A document defining a SMDS Interface Protocol MIB
  143. was introduced to the Working Group in a presentation made by Kaj Tesink
  144. of Bellcore.  The Working Group will consider this document further in
  145. subsequent meetings.
